Tori’s Quirks – Music Edition

Want to get to know me better? Here are some quirky tidbits – my music quirks. Feel free to share your own in the comments!

Music Quirks
  • I have pretty eclectic tastes, especially in French. Genres I wouldn’t listen to in English, I might listen to in French. Somehow, they’re different. For example, while I can recognize that Celine Dion has an amazing voice and range, she’s not really my type, except I love her French album, D’Eux, from the 1990s. And while rap and hip hop aren’t my thing, there are some French rappers I enjoy, like Maître Gims.
  • I don’t like anything I consider sleepy. Not sure how to explain this without giving examples that might offend someone, so I won’t. I like a strong beat, music that makes me feel.
  • I can’t write or study or read while listening to music, because I get too into the music to concentrate on the thing I’m supposed to be doing.
  • I can’t really list favorites because they change with my mood – like food.

The Time I…

…nearly got crushed by a forest elephant in Tanzania

The Time I Elephant

At the end of my time in Rwanda, I spent three weeks in Arusha, Tanzania, to visit my boyfriend who worked for the UN’s Rwanda War Crimes Tribunal. The wife of one of his colleagues came to visit from Canada with her friend, and the three of us went on safari together in Lake Manyara National Park, a smaller park near the Serengeti.

At one point we were driving through a forested area when we were confronted by a mother forest elephant. Forest elephants are a little smaller than their savanna cousins, but still massive by human standards.

Anyway, this elephant faced off with our Land Rover, trumpeted, and started walking towards us. Our driver said this was probably a mother elephant with a baby nearby, who saw us as a threat. He drove slowly in reverse, but the elephant kept coming.

It was amazing to be so close to my favorite animal, but scary and thrilling, too.

We continued to move backward through the forest, and eventually, we moved far enough away from her baby to satisfy the mother. She came to a stop and watched us back up a little farther, then turn around and drive away.

Have you ever had a close call with Mother Nature? Tell me about it in the comments!

Tori’s Quirks – Food Edition

Want to get to know me better? Here are some quirky tidbits – my food quirks. Feel free to share your own in the comments!

Tor's quirks: grapefruit
  • One of my favorite treats is fresh grapefruit dipped in Hershey’s chocolate syrup. It’s not the best snack when I’m writing because it gets my hands sticky, but it sure is yummy.
  • I love leftovers – but only some. Nothing that requires too much work, like using a knife and fork. I’ll take leftover soup, stew, casserole, risotto, or pasta any day!
  • Speaking of soup, I could live on soup, as long as I get plenty of variety. Some favorites include barley, lentil, avgolemono, black bean, and caldo gallego.
  • Speaking of variety, I can’t name a favorite cuisine. It all depends on my mood.

New Year, New Puppy

Happy New Year!

My 2018 was very busy. Not bad; just busy. My day jobs took up more and more time, and I just didn’t have the time or energy for writing. But things are changing. I have some responsibilities to get out of the way in the first few months of 2019, but I’ve already started revising Saving Their Wolf, and I look forward to sharing its cover with you soon.

In the meantime, you can read the first two (unedited) chapters here and here.

Another thing that took up my time in 2018 was our new puppy. His nickname is Foxy – just look at that face! He’s now 4 months old and we’ve had him since just before Thanksgiving. You may have already seen his photos on my Facebook page or on Instagram. The whole family finds him super adorable, but he’s a lot of work. House training is going better than it had been, and other training is in progress. He mostly sits or goes to his bed when told and comes when called. He was initially reluctant to walk in the neighborhood but improves with each walk.

Feel free to share info about your own pets in the comments. I love animals!

Did you have any new additions to your family in 2018, or are you anticipating any in 2019?

A peek into my life…

Teaching has been consuming my life lately. But my schedule has just changed and I look forward to getting back to writing Saving Their Wolf. I hope you enjoyed the first chapter I posted on Halloween. Keep an eye out for more chapters.

I love teaching. And the new job is going really well. There have been some challenges – a district superintendent I worked for many years ago called middle schoolers “hormones in sneakers”. Well, nowadays, many of my students wear socks with sandals, even in the snowy, blustery weather we’ve been having recently, but it’s otherwise an apt description. Middle schoolers are going through so many changes, and at very different rates. But it’s all good; I get to share my love of French, and they get to learn while having fun.

What’s consuming your time these days? Share in the comments!

My orange belt

If you follow me on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, then you already know that I started taking Taekwondo a few months ago. For three years, I spent twice a week there with my kids, and I’ve been interested ever since. I was a dancer, once upon a time. But ever since having kids, I’ve wanted to kick some butt. The time was finally right.

It’s been an interesting journey. I’m no spring chicken. I’ve had pulled muscles in my thighs and back. I’ve felt excruciating pain in my chest, shoulder, and arm, and the tops of my feet from roundhouse kicks and my hands from punches. I’ve endured humiliation, getting winded, and being slower than the teens. But it’s also been a ton of fun.

In June, I survived my first belt test. I earned my yellow belt but I wasn’t able to break the board. I’d gone into it feeling really confident about my front kick. I’d spent hours practicing that kick, and had broken multiple practice boards. But when the board didn’t break after the first few kicks, I guess I lost my confidence. After several more tries, the instructor had me try to break the board with a hammer fist. Something I’d only done on a practice board twice and hadn’t prepared for the test. No surprise, that didn’t work.

So, I went into last week’s test feeling pretty nervous. In addition to my anxiety about whether I’d be able to break the board this time, my back had been bothering me for three or four weeks. I’d been icing it, taking hot baths with Epsom salt, using peppermint oil and arnica gel, and alternating between stretching my back and not stretching my back. My back had improved, until four days before the test. The last class before my test, every single thing we did was excruciating. I didn’t know if I could physically make it through the test.

But I did. And I broke the board – on the first try! The proof is below. And above is a picture of me with my new belt – orange.

A peek into my life…

When I first started dating my husband, he had a 2-year-old nephew, AJ. An active little boy with sparkling eyes and a mischievous smile. I fell for that little boy before I fell for my husband!

AJ spent a weekend with us when we first got married. We took him to Liberty Science Center and fed him PB&J sandwiches in front of cartoons. We had a blast!

When we had our first child, we moved four hours away from AJ. Luckily, we still saw him (and the rest of the family) for holidays – and he spent a week here or there with us during school vacations. My boys adore their big cousin. They built a snowman together, went sledding, watched movies, played with trains. My guys climbed all over him, brought him to their swim lessons, shared their favorite foods and movies.

Now, AJ is a grown man in the military, stationed thousands of miles away. He calls each of us on our birthday, as well as me on Mother’s Day and my husband on Father’s Day. He asks about my writing and always says he’s going to read my books. He’s interested in the things we all do. The adorable little boy with sparkling eyes and a mischievous smile has grown into an amazing man, who is about to go on his first overseas deployment to protect our country and all the people he loves.

I have always been a bleeding heart idealist, but…

I couldn’t be more proud of him.

And I hope he returns to us, safe and sound, very soon.

Godspeed, AJ. We love you.
